Spatial Database Transfer Standards 2: Characteristics for Assessing Standards and Full Descriptions of the National and International Standards in ... Data (International Cartographic Association) Feature

This book represents five and a half years of work by the ICA Commission on Standards for the Transfer of Spatial Data during the 1991- 95 ICA cycle. The effort began with the Commission working to develop a set of scientific characteristics by which every kind of spatial data transfer standard could be understood and assessed. This implies that every facet of the transfer process must be understood so that the scientific characteristics could be most efficiently specified. The members of the Commission spent hours looking at their own standard and many others, to ascertain how to specify most effectively the characteristic or subcharacteristic in question. The result is a set of internationally agreed scientific characteristics with 13 broad primary level classes of characteristics, 85 secondary characteristics, and about 220 tertiary characteristics that recognizes almost every possible capability that a spatial data transfer standard might have.
It is recognized that no one standard possesses all of these characteristics, but contains a subset of these characteristics. However, these characteristics have been specified in such a way to facilitate understanding of individual standards, and use by interested parties of making comparisons for their own purposes. Although individual applications of a standard may be for different purposes, this set of characteristics provides a uniform measure by which the various standards may be assessed.
The book presents an Introduction and four general chapters that describe the spatial data transfer standards activities happening in Europe, North America, Asia/Pacific, and the ISO community. This provides the context so the reader can more easily understand the scientific and technical framework from which a particular standard has come. The third section is a complete listing of all of the three levels of characteristics and their meaning by the inclusion of a set of definitions for terms used in the book. The fourth section, and by far the largest, contains 22 chapters that assess each of the major national and international spatial data transfer standards in the world in terms of all three levels of characteristics. Each assessment has been done by a Commission member who has been an active participant in the development of the standard being assessed in the native language of that standard. A cross-table chart is also provided.

Practical Support for CMMI-SW Software Project Documentation Using IEEE Software Engineering Standards Feature

Software process definition, documentation, and improvement should be an integral part of every software engineering organization.  This book addresses the specific documentation requirements in support of the CMMI-SW® by providing detailed documentation guidance in the form of:

  • Detailed organizational policy examples.
  • An Integrated set of over 20 deployable document templates.
  • Examples of over 50 common work products required in support of assessment activities.
  • Examples of organizational delineation of process documentation.

This book provides a set of IEEE Software Engineering Standards-based templates that support the documentation required for all activities associated with software development projects. The goal is to provide practical support for individuals responsible for the development and documentation of software processes and procedures.  The objective is to present the reader with an integrated set of documents that support the requirements of the CMMI-SW® Levels 2 and 3.  This book is meant to both complement and extend the information provided in Jumpstart CMM®/CMMI® Software Process Improvement Using IEEE Software Engineering Standards.  Jumpstart provides a detailed mapping of both the CMM® and the CMMI-SW® to the IEEE standards set and provides a logical basis for the material contained within this text.

It is hoped that this book will provide specific support for organizations pursuing software process definition and improvement.  For organizations that do not wish to pursue CMMI® accreditation, this document will show how the application of IEEE Standards can facilitate the development of sound software engineering practices. It also comes with a CD-Rom.

Methods, Standards, and Maturity: Developing the Standard for Ssadm (Mcgraw-Hill International Series in Software Engineering) Feature

Standards in IT are becoming prevalent, often driven by the multinational supplier, but now increasingly by the customer too, as IS managers recognize their contribution to planning, organization and control. This text describes the role standards can play, distinguishing between different types of standard and their relevance to organizations at different stages of development. In particular, the development of the BS standard for SSADM is described in detail as a large-scale example.

Standards Battles in Open Source Software: The Case of Firefox

Standards Battles in Open Source Software: The Case of Firefox Review

Standards Battles in Open Source Software: The Case of Firefox Feature

In many ways, the rise of the open source web browser Firefox contradicts common wisdom and expectations. An industry with network effects, as is the case in the web browser industry, should follow the rationale of "the strong grows stronger, and the weak becomes weaker". This means that in the long run, a single dominant technology will prevail that prevents competing technologies from obtaining a foothold in the market. We can therefore explain the victory of Internet Explorer (IE) over Netscape mainly because IE was bundled with the Windows operating system; however, we still need to understand the rise of Firefox in a 'winner-takes-all market'. Could the characteristics of Firefox, an open source software web browser, explain this unexpected success? This book brings together insights from open source software, open standards, and standards-setting, and illustrates the dynamics of standards-settings by examining two standards battles: Internet Explorer versus Netscape, and Internet Explorer versus Firefox.
